Essential Question
  • 1. Who were the first people to live in the Americas? Do you think it was called America at that time?
  • 2. Do you think the natives were happy to give up their land?
  • 3. Why do you think the settlers/colonizers wanted this land?
  • 4. Do you think it is right to take something that does not belongs to you and in fact belongs to someone else? Why do you think this might not be right?
  • 5. Do you think calling it a "discovery" makes it okay to take away other people's land?
  • 6. In the past California was known for its many riches such as gold, why do you think the colonizers cared so much about this while the natives did not?
  • 7. How can we acknowledge the natives who cared for our land in the past? What are some ways you think we can positively give back to relatives of the natives who cared for our land?
