Learning for Justice is relaunching the Teaching Hard History podcast series with host Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Ph.D., to resist current efforts to erase and alter our nation’s history. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we uplift liberation and Black joy and culture. And we commit to learning and teaching the hard history that is foundational to the United States and the ongoing movement for freedom and equality.

Talking With Children About the Hard History of Slavery in the United States

The relaunch of the Teaching Hard History podcast series reminds us that discussing the history of slavery in the United States in age-appropriate ways can help young people understand how that history influences life today. Slavery is the institution that made racism a part of our nation’s foundation, and the legacy of slavery is present in many current systems that disproportionately affect Black children and families. If we are to build a more positive future together, learning this history is essential for healing and reconciliation.

Pamela Cytrynbaum

Pamela Cytrynbaum teaches writing and multimedia storytelling at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. At Brandeis University she taught in American Studies, served as associate director of the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism and director of the Justice Brandeis Innocence Project. Adrienne van der Valk began her career in social work, advocating for homeless and runaway youth and survivors of sexual violence. Her graduate studies led her to political science and journalism, and she has been using her editorial skills in a variety of social justice settings ever since. She served as deputy director for Teaching Tolerance for many years before moving on to become the communications director for the Center for Genetics and Society. Ana María Hanssen is an award-winning Colombian journalist, writer and author. A graduate of the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, she co-wrote “Holocausto en el Silencio,” a ground-breaking report on the 1985 invasion of the Colombian Palace of Justice by guerilla forces, which won the National Literature Award for best non-fiction book in Colombia in 2006. She has worked as a documentary researcher and has also written for publications such as (La Nación and G7 in Argentina), (Poder in Mexico and the US), and (Cambio, El Espectador and Alternativa in Colombia), where she began her career.
