Mónica Ramirez

For more 15 years Ramirez has been an activist for farmworkers and immigrant rights. She is currently acting deputy director at Centro del los Derechos del Migrante, Inc. (Center for Migrant Rights), based in Baltimore, Md. She was senior staff attorney and project director of Esperanza: The Immigrant Women's Legal Initiative at the Southern Poverty Law Center. She is the daughter and granddaughter of migrant farmworkers.

Indian Occupation of Alcatraz

The announcement on November 20, 1969 from 89 American Indians – mostly students from colleges and universities – that they were taking over Alcatraz Island, set in motion what would become the longest occupation of a federal facility by Native Americans to date. This report aired a year later on NBC News, in December 1970, six months before the occupation ended.

The Great Fulton Fake-Out

Remember Constance McMillen? She’s the lesbian teen in Fulton, Miss., who fought to take her date to the prom and wear a tuxedo. Her case drew national attention after she and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged the Itawamba County School District. The district had banned same-sex prom dates and decreed that only male students could wear tuxedos.
