McCarthy: Enemy of the Negro People (excerpt, p. 14)

The following excerpt from the journal Jewish Life in 1953 describes Eslanda Goode Robeson’s experience testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Eslanda Goode Robeson was an anthropologist, activist and the business manager of her husband, fellow activist Paul Robeson. The couple’s perceived communist sympathies caused tremendous professional difficulty for the Robesons, but both used their HUAC testimony as platforms to speak out against American hypocrisy and injustice.
