N-Word Or No N-Word? That is the Question

By now, most people have heard about the new edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn being released next month. In it, the n-word has been slashed 219 times and replaced by “slave.” Discussions over this edition have been loud, particularly in literary and education circles. Erasing the n-word would, theoretically, free teachers to teach Huck Finn again. After all, year after year, the novel appears on the American Library Association’s list of most frequently challenged or banned books.But what have we heard from our young people about this issue?

Renée Gokey

Renée Gokey is the Teacher Services coordinator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. She is an enrolled member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and is also Shawnee, Sac-n-Fox and Myaamia from her paternal Grandparents. In 2000, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of New Mexico in Anthropology and Native American Studies, where she also began studying and performing flamenco dancing. She received a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction (Transformative Teaching) from George Mason University in 2018. She has been working with
