Andrea has worked for over 20 years reporting on issues such as reducing health disparities, infant mortality, prevention of chronic disease, end-of-life care, childhood obesity, men’s health, women’s health and HIV/AIDS. Her writing on heath has appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine, Essence, More, Heart & Soul, the Washington Post, the Lansing State Journal, Huffington Post, Salon.com, NBC BLK, The Root, The Griot, Yahoo and others. Sonia Galaviz is a 5th grade elementary teacher in Boise, Idaho. She has taught in both the primary and intermediate grades and teaches as an adjunct faculty for University of Phoenix and Boise State University. In 2009 she received the honor of Idaho Woman of the Year from the Idaho Business Review. In 2011 Sonia was one of five educators in the nation chosen to receive an award in Excellence in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy from Teaching Tolerance. Sonia serves on the state board for the Idaho Education Association.

Cara Liebowitz is a college student, activist, and writer with multiple disabilities. She aims to change the way educators view disability by bringing disability culture, history, and pride into the classroom. She will graduate in Fall 2013 from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in special education.

Matthew Halpern is lucky enough to teach kindergarten. He left his former profession as a computer programmer and the hustle and bustle of the corporate world eight years ago to pursue his dream of teaching. Receiving his teaching certification through The University of Southern Maine’s alternative certification program ETEP, he then went on to earn his master’s in literacy education. His work in the classroom inspires his reflective writing.

Rebecca S. Bigler, Ph.D., is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests are social cognition in children, gender role development and racial stereotyping.

Jill Silos-Rooney, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of History at MassBay Community College and authors the Open Academic blog about higher education policy, student and educator concerns, and new education technology.

Dr. Claudia Peralta is a professor in the Literacy Department at Boise State University. Her research interests focus on bilingual education, literacy and biliteracy, multicultural education, and social justice. She has published extensively in both English and Spanish, and her latest work focuses on the schooling experiences of Latinos and refugee students both in the U.S. and in their country of origin.

Heather A. O'Connell is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, and a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her work contributes to understandings of race and racial inequalities in the United States by examining differences across places. This spatial lens has led to a focus on processes connected to racial composition, history, region, and migration.

Julie Weiss is an education writer with a commitment to social justice. She holds a Ph.D. in American studies, has taught at the college level and now develops curricula, textbook materials and assessments.
