Back to School: Creating a Nurturing School Culture

This back-to-school season, educators, parents and caregivers can commit to partnering to support all young people. A nurturing school culture that prioritizes well-being along with learning is essential for keeping children in school and ending pushout — a critical step in dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline. Building and sustaining relationships in nurturing ways can help to create the sense of safety and support young people need for learning. The effectiveness of these practices increases when combined with strong family, school and community partnerships.

Daryl Howard, Ph.D., is an equity instructional specialist whose work and research interests include race and cultural proficiency, social emotional learning, and the triumphs and challenges of African American male students. As a member of Maryland’s State Department of Education’s Task Force on Equity and Excellence for Black Boys, he researches and recommends policy and practice to disrupt harmful narratives, decrease disproportionality and elevate achievement. Talking With Children About the Hard History of Slavery in the United States

The relaunch of the Teaching Hard History podcast series reminds us that discussing the history of slavery in the United States in age-appropriate ways can help young people understand how that history influences life today. Slavery is the institution that made racism a part of our nation’s foundation, and the legacy of slavery is present in many current systems that disproportionately affect Black children and families. If we are to build a more positive future together, learning this history is essential for healing and reconciliation.

Teach Truth: Resist Efforts to Censor and Whitewash History

The accurate history of American slavery should be taught to children in age-appropriate and honest ways that develop critical thinking, while recognizing that Black history is U.S. history and goes beyond slavery. These LFJ publications—including Teaching Hard History: American Slavery, a K-12 curriculum framework—reinforce the importance of teaching this history honestly and provide resources for educators and parents.

Overcoming Intolerance Learned at Home

During the school year, I try to empower my students to make their own decisions and form their own opinions. I begin with a unit I call, “Question Authority.” Students investigate all kinds of authorities, including government, media, and history. It’s a powerful unit that leaves kids shocked (“Food labels can say fat-free even if there’s fat in the food?”), disappointed (“Those models in the magazine are all Photoshopped?”), and angry (“We imprisoned people just because of their ethnic heritage?”). They learn to develop a critical lens with which to question the reality they once blindly accepted.
