Successful escape was difficult and rare, but some enslaved people managed to free themselves. Since there was often a cash reward for returning enslaved people who ran away, fugitives from slavery were often searched for by people hoping to collect a reward. Some self-liberated people joined the Union Army and fought during the Civil War.
