Should I Sacrifice to Live Half-American?
In this letter to the editor published two months after the United States’ entry into World War II, 26-year-old James G. Thompson outlined the mixed feelings of many African Americans at that moment—a patriotic desire to sacrifice for their country coupled with well-warranted skepticism about whether that sacrifice would be recognized by a nation rife with racial injustice.
