Veteran Benefits Denied Holders

This article appeared in the Pittsburgh Courier, a Black newspaper, in October 1945. The author raised concerns that the Army and Veterans Administration used “blue discharges” to deny returning Black soldiers their rightful GI benefits. The brewing fight for civil rights would be about much more than just political equality; “blue discharges” offer one example of institutional and individual prejudices working in tandem to deny marginalized people access to social and economic benefits.
