Ana María Hanssen is an award-winning Colombian journalist, writer and author. A graduate of the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, she co-wrote “Holocausto en el Silencio,” a ground-breaking report on the 1985 invasion of the Colombian Palace of Justice by guerilla forces, which won the National Literature Award for best non-fiction book in Colombia in 2006. A Chance for Justice at Low-Income Schools

A legal settlement reached in Los Angeles Tuesday could reverberate through schools in low-income neighborhoods across the country. The Board of Education there approved a deal with the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups that would radically limit the practice of laying off teachers based solely on seniority.
