Commemorate 9/11 by Confronting Islamophobia

Last week, Teaching Tolerance ran a post from an assistant principal in Illinois. Lamenting the recent spate of anti-Islamic incidents and the rising anti-Muslim rhetoric, she wrote:I immediately wondered how to tackle this head-on as an educator. What would I say to my teachers about how to approach the subject in our history classes? How could I be a participant in a difficult conversation in which some of our Muslim students are directly affected?

Rebecca Coven is a high-school English and social studies teacher at Sullivan High School in Chicago, Illinois. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and a member of the Caucus of Working Educators. Christopher Howell

Christopher Howell (he/him) got his start teaching nine preschoolers at a small private school in Virginia Beach. After receiving his undergrad and graduate degrees from the University of Virginia, funded by the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, he went on to teach 4th and 5th grades for three years.
