Social Justice in Science Class

LFJ is piloting our Community Justice Sites programming at the SPLC’s Road to 60 Summit in Mississippi. Our Community Justice Sites are Freedom Schools and Citizenship Schools for everyone. When we “learn for justice,” we center learning to inform our action for liberation and justice in our communities.
Teaching children empathy that leads to justice means much more than teaching kindness. Adults—educators, parents and caregivers—who support young learners have the opportunity to create “culture[s] of justice” in which empathy and justice are the priority. These LFJ resources feature strategies that educators, parents and caregivers can use to actively engage little learners as they develop age-appropriate skills and understanding that will lead them forward in the pursuit of justice.
What does social justice education really mean? The current climate of censorship and disinformation along with attacks on inclusive education makes it crucial for us all to understand the role of education in building a just society that benefits us all.
Critical Practices for Social Justice Education is a resource guide to support K-12 educators in growing their understanding of social justice principles and integrating them into their practice. This revised edition is informed by the current social and political landscape and acknowledges the ways educators have been challenged by increased political scrutiny, censorship and debate about what can be taught in schools. Despite these challenges, educators across the country have renewed their commitment to inclusive, affirming and equitable education.
Relationship and community are essential in effecting positive change and transforming punitive spaces into nurturing environments. These new articles from the Spring 2023 issue of Learning for Justice magazine highlight the significance of intentionality for building relationship and community—both inside and outside of the classroom—in ways that heal, uplift and create inclusive spaces where all can flourish.
