Teaching “America’s National Crime”

This week, we asked you what you needed in the face of uncertainty caused by school closures and the COVID-19 pandemic, and many responded. We compiled these lessons and resources to help guide you, your students and their caretakers right now.
As you discuss Thanksgiving with students, we hope you’ll reflect and use these resources to guide them to a more comprehensive understanding. It’s critical to address the truth and violence surrounding the day while also ensuring your students feel safe and prepared. It’s also critical to uplift the voices of Indigenous people, many of whom mourn the day and the pain that accompanies it.
June 12 is the anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, which ended the criminalization of interracial marriage. Use this primary source text written by Mildred Loving, as well as our recommendations to incorporate the film The Loving Story in the classroom, to help students understand the gravity of this historic case.
