Build Bridges of Understanding and Celebrate Our Commonalities

We offer activities for children and families, our newest magazine and book reviews to help build bridges of understanding for ourselves and the children in our lives during this holiday season. Help children develop a strong sense of self and identity while recognizing and honoring diversity in the world. Because we are different, we find space for new thoughts and ideas and opportunities to appreciate diverse ways of being and living. And our commonalities, recognized in various ways, allow us to connect as families, friends and communities.

Supporting Cross-Cultural Friendships

When I was growing up, most of my friends were a lot like me. We looked a lot alike, lived in similar neighborhoods and rarely questioned the racial and cultural uniformity that was the fabric of our lives. This isn’t to say that my high school lacked all diversity. Like many high schools, our student population was fairly segregated, and I stuck with the group where I felt most comfortable. It wasn’t until college that I experienced some authentic diversity, developed friendships with people who were different from me, and began to recognize how isolated I had been in high school.

Giving ‘Trouble’ a Second Chance

Many times in my career, I have heard a colleague warn, “Watch out for that one! He’s trouble!” Students quickly gain a reputation with the teachers. In an effort to help each other, teachers may offer a warning about a challenging student. I’ve learned not to believe everything I’m told.
