Renée Gokey is the Teacher Services coordinator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. She is an enrolled member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and is also Shawnee, Sac-n-Fox and Myaamia from her paternal Grandparents. In 2000, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of New Mexico in Anthropology and Native American Studies, where she also began studying and performing flamenco dancing. Take Mix It Up Beyond One Day

I love teaching in a co-op with other homeschoolers and former public educators. We are an incredibly diverse group—racially, ability-wise and religiously. We also incorporate diversity in our guest speakers and field trips. The first day of school this year, we were chanting and doing art projects with Tibetan monks. Lunch With Teacher Builds Relationships

Consider the humble lunch as one of your most powerful teaching tools. From the first day of school, Ricky was one of my most difficult students. Defensive, angry, and sensitive, this 7-year-old was constantly putting up walls and “testing” the adults in charge to see if we would respond to his needs. With the lack of a guidance counselor or a full-time school psychologist in the school, I knew that I had to find a way to connect with him, or we were going to have a disastrous school year.
