Stories Can Offer Affirming Models of Love and Acceptance

This holiday season, share stories with children that deepen our values and celebrate our shared humanity. “Fireflies,” our newest children’s story about family, love and identity, gives children affirming messages and offers a model to adults on responding to a child questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. When 10-year-old Kaden wonders whether he’s gay, he turns to his older brother Zain, who offers the love and acceptance all caring adults should give to a child.

Defusing School Violence

This lesson explores the complexities of a situation in which immigrant students attend a school that is plagued with racially motivated violence. Working in small groups and as a class, students will discuss possible solutions and outcomes and apply their problem-solving skills to issues affecting their own school and community.

Effective Classroom Facilitation Is Critical to Psychologically Safe and Supportive Learning Spaces

During this back-to-school season, let’s commit to ending school pushout and keeping children in the classroom. Effective classroom facilitation is critical to supporting student learning and lessening behavior concerns. We offer this classroom facilitation model with practices to help educators respond to student behavior with the goal of ensuring well-being and keeping learning on track rather than maintaining absolute control. It focuses on children’s development instead of punishment and offers proactive and inclusive practices to create affirming learning spaces.

Latinos and the Fourteenth Amendment: A Primary Document Activity

In this lesson, students will work in pairs and use expert reading strategies to analyze the Court’s ruling in Hernandez v. Texas. After participating in a carousel discussion, students will write a three-minute paper describing how the United States would be different if the Court had reached an alternate conclusion.
