Teaching for Change provides teachers and parents with the tools to create schools where students learn to read, write and change the world. Teaching for Change operates from the belief that schools can provide students the skills, knowledge and inspiration to be citizens and architects of a better world—or they can fortify the status quo. By drawing direct connections to real-world issues, Teaching for Change encourages teachers and students to question and rethink the world inside and outside their classrooms, build a more equitable, multicultural society and become active global citizens.

Tom Owens, a children's book author living in Central Iowa, is a frequent contributor to Teaching Tolerance magazine.

Jaime Diego Chavez is a counselor and peer mediation teacher at Lawndale High School in Lawndale, Calif.

Letitia L. Star is a freelance journalist dedicated to writing about health, mental health, education and social justice.

Andrea Bittle is an educator in Chapel Hill, NC. She teaches and writes from Durham, NC.

Alan McEvoy is a professor of sociology at Northern Michigan University. He has published books and articles on rape, child abuse, youth suicide, domestic violence, bullying, gambling and violence in schools. McEvoy is especially concerned with helping victims of violence heal, and supporting schools and community organizations in preventing violence.

Montana writer and poet Jennifer Greene was teaching college students before she got her first real look at the history of the Flathead Reservation and how her ancestors, the Bitteroot Salish people, came to live there. In her fiction and poetry — including this story — she often puts herself in the place of those ancestors, recreating their voices.

Lisa M. Weinbaum teaches seventh-grade literature in southern New Mexico. This is her 18th year of teaching.
