George is an award-winning teacher and author. The child of Holocaust survivors, he began teaching in 1983 to tell his family’s story and increase acceptance and understanding among young people. Cassutto was an innovator in bringing the internet to the K-12 classroom during the 1990s. He has since published The Internet Pocket Guide for Teachers, Civics Lesson Plans and US History Lesson Plans for new, overworked and out-of-subject-area teachers.

Seeing Economic Justice for All

In early 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders continued plans for a Poor People’s Campaign. It would take place in the spring in Washington, D.C. The poor and those in solidarity with them would take up temporary residence and march peacefully on the Capitol and advocate for substantial anti-poverty legislation from Congress. They would demand jobs, healthcare and decent housing.

Reading Ads with a Social Justice Lens

Children are surrounded – and targeted – by advertisements: on television, the computer, even on their journeys to and from school. Children need specific strategies for reading and talking about advertisements and their impact. Reading Ads with a Social Justice Lens is a series of 13 multidisciplinary mini-lessons that provide such strategies and build critical literacy. The lessons are designed for students in grades K-5 and include suggestions for simple adaptations. These lessons open up important conversations about the relationship between advertisements and social justice. Children will see that they have the power to decide how media will influence them. They will also engage in social justice projects that address some of the unfair messages they find in advertising.
