Petition to the North Carolina General Assembly from Currituck County Citizens (1861)

The petitioners, who fear that the free black population of Currituck County will join with enslaved people in a revolt against the white people of the county, request that the North Carolina General Assembly to remove all free black people from the county. They suggest this can be done either by forcing them from their homes or by condemning them into slavery. The petitioners also advise the assembly to boost the number of enslavers in Currituck.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This year, as we honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we want to reflect upon the reality of his mission and share with young people the complexity of both the man and the civil rights movement. In recent years, King’s legacy has been used in attacks on critical race theory and attempts to undermine social justice education. These LFJ resources—including words of wisdom from the late Rep. John Lewis—can aid in understanding the contemporary significance of the civil rights movement in countering policies that attempt to limit teaching honest history.

Get Past the Discomfort, Discuss LGBT Issues

I work as an instructional coach at a large, diverse and underperforming urban public elementary school. Our students are at-risk. Families are struggling with stress and trauma. Teachers work mightily to close the achievement gap. So as I left a third-grade classroom the other day after a check-in with the teacher, I wasn’t surprised when she said, “Wait, can I ask you one more thing?”
