The Truth About Voting

In this lesson, students will learn some common myths about voting today, think through who these myths might benefit, learn why these myths are incorrect and consider how people might ensure every eligible citizen has a chance to vote. In an extension activity, students learn how to register to vote.

Marvin Reed resides in the Bay Area and teaches third grade at Rosa Parks Elementary School in the Berkeley Unified School District. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, a master’s degree in higher education and leadership policies, a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential and currently is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership from California State University, Sacramento. She received her doctorate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in education studies in diverse populations. Her research focuses on developing students’ historical empathy skills as a way of understanding the past’s connection and relevance to the present.
