Beauty is Skin Deep

During this lesson, students will reflect on the ways they have experienced or participated in bias based on physical size and appearance—and will discuss how society’s expectations about body image and appearance affect people. Students build on their media literacy skills as they examine media images for messages that consciously and unconsciously affect attitudes and behaviors toward others. Moses Rifkin is a high school physics teacher in Seattle, Washington. Learning how to teach science in a way that supports social justice is hugely important to him, and the positive steps he has taken towards this as a co-creator of the Underrepresentation Curriculum are something he feels very proud of. Anna Czarnik-Neimeyer

Anna is the assistant director and chief of staff at St. Norbert College’s Cassandra Voss Center (CVC), which focuses on transformation through initiatives related to race, class, gender and identity. Czarnik-Neimeyer grew up living and working at camps for 22 years before becoming the national events coordinator at Holden Village, an ecumenical learning and retreat center in the Cascade Mountains.
